Chapter Nine

JORIE TUCKED HER BARE FEET BENEATH HER ON the sofa and tipped her head back. The keen edge of want she’d experienced at Simon’s office had ebbed slightly, subsiding to a banked fire that licked at the edges of her conscience. She and Simon had exchanged stories about Lily and James during lunch. The light banter had chased away the lingering shadows in his gaze.

He’d joined her there on the sofa, where he’d gathered her into his arms and began nuzzling her neck. Through the large window, the view of the tree-strewn grounds of Boston Common was breathtaking. “If I were you,” she told him, shivering slightly when he found her earlobe and worried it with his teeth, “I’d never want to leave here.” She indicated the view with a wave of her hand. “That window in my living room is the only one in my apartment. It overlooks an air-conditioning unit on the building next door.”

Simon’s long legs were stretched out in front of him. His fingers danced a light rhythm at the nape of her neck. “The view is one of the reasons I chose this place.”

Her gaze strayed to the painting. How much of the pastoral setting, she wondered, evoked memories of his childhood at Peter Wells’s home?

His fingers wended through her unruly curls, caressing and rubbing her scalp. She felt goose bumps spread down her spine. “Jordan?” he said softly.

She liked the way he said her name. She looked at him. “Yes?”

He applied a gentle pressure to the back of her neck, easing her against him. “I told you I didn’t want to talk about the painting.”

“Yes.” She sucked in a sharp breath when he lifted a hand to cup her breast. Her cotton T-shirt and the lace of her bra provided no barrier from the warmth of his hand.

“I don’t want to talk about the view, either.” He rubbed his thumb in a tight circle on the tip of her breast.

“Oh.” She placed one hand on his chest where she could feel his heart beat. “What do you want to talk about?”

A slight smile played at the corner of his mouth. “I don’t want to talk about anything.” He slid his hand down her arm, bringing her closer. “Although I would like to hear you tell me now again.”

Jorie took a deep breath and looked into his compelling eyes. The fire burned there, now, reaching out to her, sending shivers of desire down her spine. She wet her lips with the tip of her tongue. “Now, Simon,” she said softly. “I’m ready.”

“I’m glad.”

“I think you should know—”

He covered her mouth with his fingers and gently stroked her top lip. “I’ll learn the secrets as we go along,” he assured her. “Just tell me yes or no.”

Something inside her melted and flowed whitehot. “Yes. Oh yes,” she said softly.

With a light oath, he covered her mouth with his own as he lifted her slightly so she lay across his lap. “Kiss me, Jorie,” he told her.
